One of the lessons that I taught in my life drawing class at Sheridan College is that sometimes people over emphasize the need to spend hours and hours on a drawing or painting...

To paint or draw quickly isn't determined by how fast you physically put down marks on to a page. It's determined by how much correct information you can put down at what rate.

If you can talk about 100 different points with 10 strokes, you are drawing faster than a person that puts down 60 strokes talking about 60 different points.

That's why there is so much beauty in simplicity

Yes, this fact this thrown into high relief when less experienced draughtsmen attempt to sketch a figure in comparison to another of greater mastery and experience. Simplicity is good. It was once said--by Einstein I think--that things should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler than possible. For a sub 5 minute study, this is nice, for a 20 minute effort, too simple. Scale is a factor too, but I digress...
