Thoughts on developing a good styleA common question I get asked is how to develop a good style.
Here are some of my thoughts on this subject...
Don't think what kind of style do people want. Just be yourself & search for knowledge. Style is developed through knowledge.
Just painting or drawing how you naturally do is not enough to develop a good solid style. If art is an interpretation of something we can relate to LIFE, then you have to learn about the different aspects of LIFE to get better at art. Nothing is sadder than seeing an artist with a great idea but doesn't have the knowledge or skill to make it happen the way they had initially envisioned it. I still have this problem from time to time so I search for the knowledge and know how to make the idea I initially had to appear the way I want it to.
Your ideas are what makes you unique. Once you have the idea, you search for the knowledge to make those ideas happen the way you envisioned it. I don't know about all of you but I can bet that when most of you learn s
Tip of the day: The darkest momentsThe moment to shine the brightest is in darkness. Darkness can bring chaos but with it comes opportunity. Many times throughout my career when I pushed past the point when I'd usually give up, this is when I end up achieving my biggest successes. Fate seems to have a way to test us and only the ones that want it the most shall receive the fruits of their labor.

7 important traits for any artistHere's a checklist of 7 important traits to becoming a successful artist. It's not the 'ultimate top 7' but these are the questions I thought of first. Either way they are extremely beneficial questions to ask yourself.
1 Do you draw even when you don't feel like it? It's an essential skill to being a successful artist.
2 Do you know what motivates you? The more you know about what makes you tick, the more productive you can become.
3 Do you constantly fight past your comfort zone? It's the best way to evolve quickly.
4 Do you set aside some time at least once a week to work on your own stuff? Keep those creative juices flowing!
5 Are you passionate about the work that you do? Keeping the passion burning will lead you to bigger and better jobs. Everyone wants to work with passionate people.
6 Are you prepared for the opportunities you're waiting for? Prepare for the opportunity now and they will come sooner than you think.
7 Are you nice to others? The most important ingredient to beco
Tip of the dayGive people more than they expect. It's the best way to move up in your career.
If you're just starting off and you get a job that pays $300, whenever you can try to give them something that looks more like a $1500 job.
It's the best way to show what you can do and the easiest, most effective way to start raising your rates.
I found after doing a great job for a company far beyond their expectations if anyone else wanted me to do the same thing I can raise my price immediately. If they can't afford it, they will still spread the word and it'll still lead me to higher priced projects.
If they can't afford you anymore, then the project still becomes a great addition for your portfolio of professional work.

Get Better At Drawing (Without Drawing Anything)Art is a process.
Like that of the scientific method and philosophical alchemy, art can be refined and improved through process. From observation, to experiment, to reflection and conclusion, art is improved by the steps we make towards change, not solidification and stagnation. Much of the advice out there for drawing is simply “practice” or “avoid distractions”. This advice is good, but there is more to creation than just throwing yourself mindlessly into a task and avoiding bad habits along the way. Good habits and knowledge will help to excel your learning process faster, and from that, improve faster and more effectively.

As an artist, observation is key. The skill we develop is not just seeing, but interpreting what we see, remembering what we have seen and recording it in the form of visual art. Tip of the dayYou can either let your environment shape you or choose YOURSELF to be who you want to be. The body & mind can be shaped into almost any type of person you wish to be. You just have to train it through persistence & constant search for knowledge.

If you want to get something out of it,  put something into it. Visibility on deviantART is mostly  a numbers game; there are so many users that unless you're interacting with others, even the highest-quality work may go nearly unseen. This advice sounds like a truism, but people seem to have difficulty  understanding that no, their work is not some kind of miracle that breaks all the rules. Don't expect the community to fawn all over you for existing. You have to make them see you.
Don't expect the community to fawn over you, period. These people are usually your peers, but even if you don't think they are - they are not your buttmonkeys. Don't treat people that way.
The people who let you treat them terribly are not the ones you want. Some people will allow, and even encourage you to treat them like slaves. The

"I wondered if there should be a portion dedicated to people- students etc who are completely unknown, who just want to get a foot in the door.
Working for free is the answer. You might balk at this because some critics say this gives the appearance that there is NO value to skill and talent. However- consider this: Working for free gives you amazing experience. It allows you to practice on someone else's project, see your work in print, establish a reputation and learn- big time. People who won't work for free WILL pay for a course! What better learning experience is there than to work with a client- such as a library or an independent book store or a school- producing poste

10 beneficial things artists should ask themselves

Here's 10 important questions to ask yourself. Read them constantly as a checklist to make sure your are heading in the right direction and using your artistic potential.

1. What motivates you to create art? Write down your answer and think about how you can use this very important information.

2. What kinds of information have you been putting on the internet? The internet is the new resume. If I can find dumb pics or comments from you then other people can too...

3. Does your art express something interesting? Great art means something to its viewers, not just its creator.

4. Does failure push you forward? How you deal with failure will determine how skillfull you will become.

5. Do you enjoy arguing or flaming people's work? If you are the type of person to hate on others, it will come back to you. Especially with the internet and all the social networking.

6. Do you try out new methods/materials/subjects that might be unconfortable at first? Success is inevitable if you always choose to believe "It is my obligation to try."

7. Do you have a strong purpose or goal? When you have a purpose, you stand by it. Something special happens when you show an undying drive to achieve a goal.

8. Are you open to meeting new people and hearing others opinions with an open mind? Your heart & mind are the gates to success & happiness. Keep them open or miss out on great opportunities.

9. You can either let your environment shape you or choose YOURSELF to be who you want to be. The body & mind can be shaped into almost any type of person you wish to be. You just have to train it through persistence & constant search for knowledge. (*I started to be "good" in art when I decided to be extremely serious about it.) 10.Do you constantly think about your goals? The best way to accomplish a goal is to have it on your mind all the time. Keep thinking about it until you obtain your goal. I'm not the first to say this one but I can't emphasize it enough.

I think it's important to mention that I don't believe I been given any natural talent when it comes to art, I believe I'm PERSISTENT. Anyone can be persistent.
